Took digital photographs of new work today. What a miracle the digital revolution is. I used to have to take slide film and deal with the expense and hassle of this process. Now I can take the image, color correct, and publish it to the website all in the space of a few hours. Even with all this technology, you still have to watch out for bounce back reflections in the paintings. Two of the new images were not suitable, so I will have to go back put the polarizers on the lamps, set it up again and shoot the two that were poor. Also digital reproduction makes every thing so flat, so that the various textures are really not visible. There are very few digital reproductions which seem to approach the true nature of the work. I will be teaching tonight at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art. What a pleasant group of individuals. It is such a pleasure to work with the quality of students that are taking classes. They all really want to be there and are very serious about the improvement in their work. We have a number of interesting personalities that makes the process very pleasant. Lots of laughter and good natured kidding makes the atmosphere very conducive to learning. I never like to see a class end for the term. I would like to have the same students there for ever. Of course, like an old dog, I never seem to want any changes ever. Sometimes I feel like I am on a moving sidewalk, like in an airport, and am clawing at the sides trying to stay in one place. Change is of course, inevitable. But, I don't have to like it.
